How they feel

A low-gauge machine knits only a few pairs an hour. The yarn is fed loosely, so the cuff stays soft and leaves little mark on the ankle.

When to wear them

They are knitted for a day in the kitchen and a day on the train alike. There are three thicknesses, so you can match the season and the shoe.

What they are made of

Cotton, wool and silk, and nothing else. The heel and toe are knitted with doubled yarn so holes take longer to appear. We dye twelve colours; white and ecru are knitted undyed.

The workshop and the shop

Kutsushita Kobo Harari is a sock workshop in Koryo-cho, Kitakatsuragi-gun, Nara, Japan. It has knitted in the same building since 1968. One corner of the workshop is the shop, where the pairs finished that day are laid out.

If this is your first pair

There are two sizes, 22–25 cm and 25–28 cm. Both knits stretch, so one pair fits anyone whose foot measures within the range.

We usually suggest the cotton rib socks first. They are thin enough for the whole year and, at ¥1,980, easy to try.

You can try a pair on in the shop. There is a chair and a mirror, so take your shoes off and check how the cuff sits.

For a gift, most people take the three-pair set. It comes in a box, with wrapping paper and a carrier bag at no charge.

You can look around the workshop from 10:00 to 15:00, except Wednesday and Sunday.

Questions we are asked

How do I choose a size?

If your foot measures 22–25 cm, take the smaller pair; 25–28 cm, take the larger one. If you are on the line, take the larger pair for the thick knits.

How should I wash them?

Turn them inside out and wash them in a mesh bag. Wash wool and silk by hand or on the delicate cycle. A tumble dryer will shrink them.

How far can mending go?

We replace the ribbing at the cuff and darn small holes. If the whole sole has worn thin, a repair will not last long, and we will tell you so.

Can you wrap a gift?

Three-pair sets come in a box. Wrapping paper and a carrier bag are free. If you would like a message card, write the message with your order.

Will you mend socks bought elsewhere?

We only mend socks knitted here. Without knowing the yarn and the stitch we cannot return the knit to its original state.
