How to compare website redesign costs.

At Arupix, a redesign costs US$79 a month, or US$1,290 once plus US$200 a year for hosting. Both include up to five pages and five revision rounds before launch. Other providers price a redesign by the six things below, so compare what each quote includes.

There is no single price for a redesign. Providers scope the work very differently, so an average figure is hard to compare against. A useful quote tells you what is included, what happens after launch, and what you are expected to supply.

What sets the price

Six things move the price of a small business redesign. Put each one to every provider you are talking to, and ask for the answer in writing.

Cost driverWhy it moves the priceAsk the provider
PagesEach page needs its own layout, words and checks. Five pages and twenty-five pages are different jobs.Which pages are included, and what does the next page cost?
WordsRewriting services, menus or policies takes time, whoever does it.Do you write the copy, edit mine, or place what I send?
PhotosYour own photos, licensed stock and a new shoot are three different costs.Whose photos will the site use, and who holds the license?
ConnectionsBooking, ordering, payment and forms each need setup and testing.Which outside services do you link to, and which do you build in?
Old page addressesIf addresses change, old links need redirects so visitors and search engines reach the new pages. Will current page addresses stay, or will you redirect them?
Hosting and updatesHosting, the security certificate and later edits continue after launch. What do I pay each year, and who makes changes after launch?

Old addresses are easy to forget in a quote. When page addresses change, Google recommends preparing a mapping from each current URL to its new one and adding permanent server-side redirects, such as 301 or 308. Google Search Central: site moves.

Before you ask for a redesign quote, write these six things down. They decide whether the job is a redesign of information pages or a project with functions that must keep running, and they let every provider quote the same scope.

Pages and addresses nowEvery current page and its address, marking the ones that get visits.Up to 5 pages in the agreed scope; more pages are agreed in writing first.
Text and photos to keepWhich text is still accurate, and which photos you own or hold a license for.Your own text and photos come first; licensed photos fill gaps and are named in your concept email.
Domain and emailWho holds the domain registration, and where your business email runs.Your domain stays with your registrar, in your name; we check your email settings before connecting.
Services that must keep workingAny blog or CMS, booking, member login, payment or shop, and who provides each one.We link the services you keep. Login, payment, shop and booking-calendar features are not built into the site, and moving posts out of an old blog or CMS is confirmed in writing before you pay.
RedirectsWhich old addresses must lead to a new page.Old addresses that need to point to new pages are listed in the written scope.
First-year and renewal costsWhat you pay in the first year and each year after, including domain renewal.Published prices, with 12- and 24-month totals below; domain renewal is paid to your registrar.

A redesign of information pages, describing your business within the agreed page count, fits the standard scope. Anything that must keep running behind the site, such as accounts, payments or a blog with many posts, needs its scope confirmed separately before you pay.

One-time build or monthly plan

Most quotes arrive in one of two shapes. A one-time build charges for design and build up front; hosting and later changes are billed separately. A monthly plan provides the build and the running of the site for a monthly fee; check what hosting and changes it includes. Neither is cheaper in every case, so compare the total over the time you expect to keep the site, and check what happens to the site and the domain if you stop paying.

What keeps the cost down

Preparing accurate material and settling the scope early cuts unnecessary checks and extra work. Fewer changes of direction, and not rebuilding what already works, help too.

Keep the booking or ordering service you already use. Linking to it is simpler than replacing it.

Send hours, prices and services in one approved document. There are fewer details to check and fewer corrections after launch.

Keep page addresses that already get visits. There are fewer redirects to set up and check.

Supply your own photos where you have them. If their quality and usage rights fit, they can be reused. Licensed photos fill the gaps, and some projects still need a new shoot.

Name one person who gives final feedback. It cuts down on conflicting requests and changes of direction.

What Arupix charges

Arupix publishes two ways to pay. Monthly: US$79 a month with no setup fee and no contract, covering up to five pages, hosting and HTTPS, domain connection and launch, and five revision rounds before launch. Once: US$1,290 for the same build, then US$200 a year for hosting from year one; pages beyond five are US$200 each. Over a full year the monthly plan comes to US$948, and the one-time option to US$1,490 in its first year.

Either way, you see a free preview and then the finished site before you pay anything. After confirming your material and scope, we aim to send the full website about seven days from the preview email. The actual delivery date is stated in that email. The pricing page sets these next to other published price lists, and website redesign explains how a redesign with us works.

Payment optionFirst 12 monthsFirst 24 months
Monthly: $79 a month, hosting included$948 (12 × $79)$1,896 (24 × $79)
One-time: $1,290 build, plus $200 a year for hosting$1,490 ($1,290 + $200)$1,690 ($1,290 + 2 × $200)

These totals assume the site stays live for the whole period. They are an example, not a quote or a prepayment: the monthly plan is paid month by month. Extra pages are set out in your quote, and domain registration is paid directly to your registrar.

Before you decide. Your domain stays registered in your name. On the monthly plan, cancel by email any time: we take the site down and help you point your domain elsewhere. On the one-time option, you receive your website files at launch. After launch, new pages or design and layout changes are agreed in writing, with scope and cost, before work begins, and a content editor is optional, with the editable areas agreed before work begins. Questions owners ask

Is a redesign cheaper than a new website?

Not automatically. A redesign can reuse your content, photos, domain and the services you already use, which saves work only when that material is still accurate. If most of it has to be rewritten, the job is close to a new site.

Do I have to pay for a redesign up front?

It depends on the provider and the contract. At Arupix you pay only if you want the finished site live, after you have seen it: US$79 a month with no setup fee, or US$1,290 once plus US$200 a year for hosting.

Will a redesign change my domain or email?

It should not. Ask the provider to confirm that your domain stays registered in your name and that your business email keeps working through the switch. At Arupix, your domain stays with your registrar, in your name, and we check and keep your business email settings.

Will my booking or ordering links keep working?

Yes, if you keep the same service. We link the booking, ordering or reservation service you already use instead of replacing it, and test each link by hand before launch.

How many changes are included?

At Arupix, five revision rounds before launch, inside the scope agreed in your concept email. Work outside that scope, such as a sixth page, is set out in writing before any work.
